Our logo is the pedestrian sign that is used in Amsterdam. A city that is light years ahead of us on the issue of pedestrian safety and transportation in general. We liked it because it has an extra layer of symbolism than the pedestrian sign we use in America. Compare the two. The Symbol for a pedestrian in New York City is a yellow reflective warning sign with a pictogram of a black man mid-stride. The symbol for a pedestrian in Holland is a blue reflective round sign with the pictogram of an adult holding a child's hand.

Think about that for a second. What it says, what it means, and how people instinctively respond differently to the messages.

Both signs attempt to communicate the same thing, and are posted in the same context of social and legal responsibility, but the sign with the adult holding a child's hand communicates a more urgent and universally understood message. This subtle symbolic difference should not be dismissed as an insignificant factor for pedestrian safety.

One of the many things we would like to make happen through Citystreets is the adaptation of the European Pedestrian Sign for American cities.
