New Concepts For NYC Yellow Cabs

NEW YORK An exhibit at Parsons The New School for Design presents new concepts for the New York yellow taxi cab.
How about a child booster seat stored in the trunk? Or a glass dome for sightseeing?
The design project brings together leading artists, designers, public officials, transportation experts and taxi industry representatives to rethink and transform the New York City taxi.
The exhibition begins today and runs through January 15th. It presents concepts for improving the taxi. It also addresses the economic, social and cultural issues associated with the taxi -- like energy efficiency and accessibility for the disabled.
One company proposes a cell phone code that could be dialed to summon a taxi through an automated dispatch system. Another company says sliding doors would save the bicyclists who crash into the regular doors when they're swung open to let people out.
The taxi is approaching its centennial in 2007.
